How many people usually show?
The average turn-out for prime time (weekday nights or weekend afternoons & nights) pick-up games is between 24 - 40.
Occasionally we play at non-prime time (weekdays 3:30 - 5 PM or weekends 9 - 10:30 AM) to give members with different schedules more chances to play. The average turn-out for those hours is between 14 - 18.
How long is the game?
Pick-up games usually last 1.5 or 2 hours without stopping or with 5 minutes break to switch side among 4 teams. Of course you can take off earlier and take water breaks whenever you want. You can get on and off the field freely for up to 500 times during the game :-)
What are the levels of the players?
Our pick-up game serves lots of purposes: lots of players use it to exercise; beginners use it to learn; advanced players use it for training exercise.
Because of many good and experienced players playing here, you'll find this is real and top quality pick-up soccer. But it's not a full-blown competitive league, beginners will be given room on the field.
Will I need soccer cleats, or normal running shoes?
You will need cleats for grass and turf, indoor soccer shoes or normal running shoes for indoor composite sport floor.
Will I need shin-guards?
Shin-guards are not mandatory, but strongly recommended.
What is the average age of the players?
The following is a list of age make-up based on the average turn-out:
15% 17 to 19-year-old
45% 20's
25% 30's
15% 40'sWhere do you usually play? What times and days do you play?
We mostly play at Burnaby, Vancouver, Coquitlam, and Richmond areas.
The times are mostly on weekend afternoons or evenings, weekday nights. Occasionally we play weekday late afternoons or weekend mornings.
How long in advance do I need to arrive to warm up?
For pick-up soccer games, you can arrive early to warm up. Or arrive at the exact beginning time listed in the email notice. You'll have plenty time to warm up; for friendly games, please arrive 45 minutes early; for competitive league games, arrive an hour early.
Is it possible that you could send me a message about how many people might be coming out for the pickup game?
If the game is being canceled for some reason, an email will be sent out at least an hour before the game. For a group size large like ours, it's impractical to send out individual email to predict a turn-out number. In our group's history, no game has been canceled because of not enough players. But because of the nature of pick-up soccer, there's always some chance of game being canceled due to field issues.
How do we pick sides? How are the players grouped?
Players will be randomly grouped.
We usually have 4 teams play 2 games side by side 6 v 6 up to 9 v 9. Sometimes we take a 5 minutes break and switch sides.
Do I need to bring dark and white shirts?
Yes. WHITE and dark shirts are mandatory, no greys please.
As an organizer, do you play yourself?
Yes, I love playing. I'm a soccer nut, that's why I'm doing all these.
How do I get into a league?
For players with or without previous competitive league playing experience and wanting to join a team, the best way to get started is to come to our pick-up soccer to start playing first. In the mean time, we'll start the process to put you in a team suitable for your skill, fitness, and interest.
The following are the types of the teams available:
Fall/Winter outdoor league, competitive
Fall/Winter outdoor league, recreational
Summer outdoor league, semi-competitive
Year-round indoor turf league, semi-competitiveMost of the league games are on weekend afternoons or nights, and some Friday nights. Game locations are in Vancouver, Burnaby, North Surrey and North Shore. Practice once or twice a week, time and location vary.
All of the teams need certain degree of commitment from players. If you can not commit in a team setting yet, you are always welcome to our pick-up soccer to play drop-in style games.
Can I put my keys somewhere while I'm playing?
Please bring your own bag where you can put your belongings in. We usually have a bunch of bags on the side of the fields during the games. We haven't had any problems.
Is there anyone that i could catch a ride with?
We have a carpool & ride info page to help members find carpool and ride partners. The page lists contact info and itineraries of members who can give ride or need ride. It is your responsibility to contact the potential partner(s) and check with each other before the game to see whether or not they are going and make arrangements.
For details, see Carpool & Ride Info.
